Reintroducing Areti Andreopoulou

We first profiled Areti in 2023, but since then, she’s been working on a lot in the SONICOM project, so we thought it was time for an update! Make sure to keep your eyes peeled, because soon we will be sharing even more about the very interesting work Areti’s leading on within the project.

Since 2023, what have been your major achievements in the SONICOM project?

Our team at NKUA has released sound directivity datasets of various traditional Greek musical instruments as well as the singing voice. We have also designed and successfully tested a protocol for HRTF database matching, which has been shown to improve spatial localisation awareness in virtual environments for individuals who don’t have personally measured HRTF data.

What are you most looking forward to in the final 12 months of SONICOM?

We are currently testing the impact of our said HRTF and data directivity research in the context of remote music education scenarios. Through collaboration with our SONICOM partners, we will be able to carry out and conclude this study through the end of the project.

What are you most proud of since being part of the SONICOM consortium?

I am very proud of the collaborative and supportive environment that all partners have built together as part of the SONICOM consortium. The strong connections built among labs, institutions, and individual researchers are, in my opinion, conducive to everyone’s professional development and will help carry the research and knowledge acquired within this project beyond SONICOM.

How do you feel the current environment is for women in science?

The SONICOM consortium is and has always been an inclusive and supportive environment. SONICOM has made a conscious effort to offer equal opportunities to researchers and students for participation and a safe space for contributing work, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, etc. I feel proud and fortunate to have been a member of such a group of individuals and institutions.

Have you got any advice for young women considering a career in STEM?

Always look for the right environment that supports your efforts and allows you to thrive.
